On the Motif
Wheat Field with Cypresses, Van Gogh, 1889

A field of ripe wheat fills the lower half, gold and ochre, laid on in short curling strokes that lean as if the wind were passing through. On the right two cypresses rise together, dark green and flame-shaped, taller than anything else in the view; a smaller one stands beside them. Olive bushes and low trees make a band of greens across the middle. Behind them the Alpilles run as a low line of blue and violet hills. Above, the sky is in motion: white and pale-blue clouds in thick swirls, with touches of mint green. A few red poppies show at the field's near edge.

It begins where he stood, framed as the painting. Ahead lies his wheat, with the cypress pair about thirty-five metres off to the right, and a green bank nearer by. Beyond the cypresses a strip of hedges crosses the land. To the right the wheat runs on into an olive grove on ground rising toward the hills. To the left lies a reaped field, and further ahead on that side a farmhouse faces south, with a poppy meadow past it. A low stone wall closes the walkable land, about sixty metres out on every side; past it a band of trees, then the Alpilles, under his painted sky.
